As Mayor, last Friday, I declared a Local State of Emergency within Mendham Township. I closed all municipal buildings and fields to the public and called for all events over 50 people be postponed or canceled. Last night, I went a step further and amended Friday’s proclamation to postpone or cancel events or gatherings of more than 10 people in the Township. I also aggressively encouraged social distancing practices.
I absolutely hate the idea of restricting or limiting people's movements, interactions, and economic activity but this situation is unprecedented. We are dealing with historic health and economic challenges, challenges that will have a profound impact on our world for decades to come. This situation requires decisive and bold temporary government measures. Measures I would have never supported under any other circumstance.
This global pandemic has already brought incredible stress to our healthcare system and everyday lives. I believe, if we work together we can prevent it from getting worse.
It is my job as mayor of Mendham Township to protect our residents, volunteers, and township employees. It’s important for people to understand that social distancing is not just standing six feet away from someone while being in large group gatherings.
Social distancing is…
* Taking personal protective measures (stay home when sick, proper hand washing, respiratory etiquette, cleaning frequently touched surfaces daily).
* Limiting your movement in the community unless absolutely necessary (bank, playground, grocery store, post office)
* Preventing or limiting visitors from coming into your home (extended family, friends, or contractors)
* Not hosting or going to playdates or hanging out
* Limiting being in public spaces where you could come into contact with another person
Social distancing is way more than six feet out. It is less about the distance between me and you and more about the possibility of one of us exposing someone…a loved one or a stranger…who can’t fight this illness. I know social distancing is difficult and inconvenient but we are all in the same boat and we all need to follow the direction of our health professionals which is being communicated through the federal, state, and local governments for the good of our society.
Most of the time, as an elected official, I try to fix problems and find solutions by working with staff, residents, and other elected officials. At this time, this problem affects us all and the outcome is dependent on all of us working together for the greater good. No one is above social distancing. Please do your part to protect your loved ones, neighbors, and the most vulnerable in our community. Help us deal with it now, so we aren’t dealing with it later. #FlattentheCurve
Community Outreach
In the coming days, Mendham Township wants to provide outreach to elderly residents in our community, particularly those living alone. Foremost, we want to help make sure they are staying home, eating well, resting and have support in the coming weeks.
How You Can Help
If you have an elderly neighbor, please consider checking in with them, by telephone or e-mail. (NOTE: In-person visits are not recommended.) Ask them if they have a supply of medications, enough food and transportation, if they need to see a doctor or have another critical appointment. Make sure they are aware of current guidance for limiting travel and participation in large group activities. Finally, ask if they have a nearby relative, friend or a caregiver whom can provide ongoing care.
Please send an e-mail to outreach(a)mendhamtownship.org<mailto:outreach@mendhamtownship.org> with the name, telephone number, e-mail and home address of residents whom should be added to the Township’s outreach list. If you sense that a resident needs immediate medical and/or emergency care, please contact 911.
Seniors and caregivers can contact the state Aging & Disability Resource Connection (https://www.adrcnj.org/) from Monday-Friday, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., for support and information at 1-800-564-4656. They can also e-mail questions to the Township at outreach(a)mendhamtownship.org.
Seniors can use these additional resources:
* Morris County COVID-19 Hotline: 973-829-8250
* Morris Area Paratransit System (MAPS): 1-888-282-6277 - https://hs.morriscountynj.gov/adv/maps/
* Mendham Area Senior Transport (Currently only providing assistance with online grocery orders.): 973-543-2666
* Morris County Health Office: https://health.morriscountynj.gov/
* Morris County: https://morriscountynj.gov/
* New Jersey 2019 Novel Coronavirus Public Call Center: 1-800-222-1222
In times of need, our community has always pulled together to help each other and provide support. We appreciate the assistance of residents during this unprecedented public health crisis.
The safety and well-being of our staff and our community is our highest priority. In response to evolving information of the spread of COVID-19, the Mendham Township Department of Public Works is taking measures to protect the health and safety of all. At this time, DPW will NOT be accepting electronic waste materials along with other recyclables at their facilities - 40 Mount Pleasant Road.
We will continue to keep our residents updated and informed as information comes through.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
Dear Residents:
Mendham Township recognizes that there is a public health emergency which presently exists in Morris County and the State of New Jersey and which may affect the health, safety and welfare of the people of the Township of Mendham.
We are taking certain measures to ensure that the authorities and our first responders will be unhampered in their efforts to maintain law and order as well as an orderly flow of traffic, and further, in order to protect the persons and property of the residents affected by the conditions.
Mendham Township's Town Hall, Library, and sports fields will be closed to members of the public until further notice starting on Monday, March 16th. Please postpone or cancel any events of more than 50 people.

SPRING BRUSH PICK UP WILL BE ONLY ON MONDAY APRIL 6, 2020
The Township Public Works Department conducts a semi-annual brush collection program to help residents remove from their property the sticks, branches and brush that nature has caused to fall during the year. The program is designed primarily for homeowners who have little to no acreage on which to discard the materials, but is open to all Township residents. The Public Works crews will not collect excessive loads cleared from the property by private contractors.
If you have brush to be collected by the public works department please follow these simple guidelines:
1. Place material at the side of the road by 7:00 a.m. (during the spring or fall collection period), with ends facing the roadway.
2. Do not tie bundles with wire! Use string only.
3. Do not put steel rods or any metal objects in with the wood.
4. All material must fit through the chipper. That means bundles must be less than twelve inches in diameter and six feet in length.
5. Please no tree stumps, and no logs over six feet long - they will not be collected
It is crucial that the above guidelines be followed. In the past, our men have been caught off guard when chipping bundles that contained wire and even metal rods, hidden inside the brush. This will damage the chipper or worse, cause serious injury to our workers.
