I am pleased to announce that the Town of Newburgh’s grant application to purchase the Desmond Estate and continue programs in accordance with Mrs. Alice Curtis Desmond’s wishes has been approved by the William and Elaine Kaplan Family Foundation on October 2, 2020.  This $1,000,000 in grants will help ensure that the Desmond Estate continues to provide essential adult enrichment classes and activities.

The public outcry to keep the Desmond Estate as an adult enrichment campus that promotes life-long learning was overwhelming.  I am glad that the Town is involved in continuing such important programs and activities.

At this time, the Town Board will pursue a contract with Mount Saint Mary College for this purchase.

I cannot thank Mr. William Kaplan, Ms. Joan Kaplan, and the Kaplan Family Foundation enough for supporting this endeavor and all prior projects that improve the quality of life in our community.
