Mendham Township Committee Plans Public Forum on New Cannabis Legislation on Monday, May 24th at 6:00PM at Town Hall and via Zoom
Residents are encouraged to participate in an upcoming forum being held by the Mendham Township Committee to hear public input regarding allowing businesses to cultivate, distribute, sell or transport cannabis in our town.
Last fall NJ voters approved a referendum to legalize cannabis. Legislation was signed on Feb 22, 2021, allowing adults to legally possess up to six ounces of marijuana, and this will not be affected by any action taken by the Township. Delivery services to our community also will be allowed, regardless of local action.
Municipalities have until August 22, 2021, to “opt out” of allowing cannabis businesses to operate within their jurisdiction. Later, municipalities can later "opt in," if they choose, at any time.

On Monday, May 10th, the Food and Drug Administration authorized the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for adolescents ages 12-15<https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/coronavirus-covid-19-up…>. Parents who have questions should talk to their pediatricians or their healthcare providers.
Thursday morning, sites across New Jersey, including the Morris County Regional Vaccination Center at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall, began administering the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to these age groups. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Walk-ups are accepted 8:00am - 3:00pm. Appointments can also be made. Learn more at the Morris County website.<https://www.morriscountynj.gov/Residents/Health/Coronavirus/Vaccination?utm…>
On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also updated its guidance saying that if individuals are fully vaccinated<https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/science/science-briefs/fully-vacc…> against COVID-19, they can resume activities without wearing a mask or staying 6 feet apart from another person. The CDC considers someone fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or two weeks following the single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The CDC made this announcement based on the scientific data on the performance of the COVID-19 vaccines, the CDC’s growing understanding of the low risk of fully vaccinated individuals transmitting the virus, universal access to vaccines to those 12 and older, and vaccine efficacy against certain variants<https://www.nejm.org/doi/10.1056/NEJMc2104974>.
A recent study<https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2779853> from researchers in Israel, which CDC Director Dr. Walensky referenced during her announcement on Thursday, estimated that the Pfizer vaccine was over 95% effective at preventing symptomatic infection and over 80% effective at preventing asymptomatic infection among healthcare workers. Another study<https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2021/p0514-covid-19-vaccine-effectivenes…> that was released yesterday by the CDC looked at healthcare workers in 25 states and reported that the mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) were 94% effective at reducing the chances of getting sick.
In response to this information, some states have lifted mask mandates. On Friday, Governor Murphy announced that NJ will keep the indoor mask mandate in place in public settings, for the time being. The Governor also said that vaccinated people don’t need to wear masks at small private gatherings and that vaccinated people don’t need to wear masks outdoors.
As a reminder - on Wednesday, May 19th, many of the capacity and gathering restrictions that have been in place for the past year will be lifted and replaced with requirements for social distancing.
Have a good weekend and take care.

Yesterday, some COVID-19 restrictions were rolled back in New Jersey. Bar seating and buffets are now permitted at restaurants and bars. Additionally, the indoor event capacity has been increased to 50% to accommodate proms, political gatherings, weddings, funerals, memorial services, and performances. The outdoor gathering limit is currently set at 500 people, but the state anticipates completely removing the limit on outdoor gatherings in the next couple of weeks to make way for summer events.
On May 19th, the state is expected to continue lessening restrictions. The current restaurant 50% indoor capacity limit will be lifted, and NJ’s restaurants and other indoor businesses will be allowed to operate at whatever capacity is necessary to ensure a minimum of six-foot distance between groups. The state is also planning to remove the prohibition on tables of eight people or more.
The general indoor gathering limit will also be revised on May 19th for house parties and will double from 25 to 50 people. For catered events, which are currently limited to 50% of a room’s capacity up to a maximum of 250, the percentage capacity will be scrapped. This means that these events will be limited to a maximum of 250 people so long as social distancing can be maintained.
As NJ continues to reopen, the NJ Department of Health is encouraging residents to continue to get vaccinated. In addition to the walk-in vaccination appointments that are available at all six NJ megasites, including the one in Rockaway, the COVID-19 vaccine is also available locally at Robinson Drug and Compounding Center<https://hipaa.jotform.com/210923615576155> and CVS Pharmacy<https://www.cvs.com/immunizations/covid-19-vaccine?eval=pSpf5OHY1hfT8wR0u3H…> in Mendham.
Have a good weekend and take care.

This past week, the state announced that over 3,000,000 New Jerseyans have now been fully vaccinated. This morning, it was announced that over 7,000,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the State of New Jersey. These are significant milestones, and with this news, additional steps in NJ’s reopening process have been announced.
On May 10th, the room capacities for indoor catered events will increase to 50%, up to a maximum of 250 individuals. The Governor mentioned that this increase will be applicable to school proms, in addition to indoor political events, weddings, funerals, memorial services, and indoor performances.
Additionally, on May 10th the outdoor gathering limit will increase to 500 from its current 200-person limit. The state hopes to increase this number again before Memorial Day.
Finally, the NJ Department of Health announced on Thursday that all six N.J. megasites, including the one in Rockaway, are offering walk-in vaccinations. You do not need an appointment to get vaccinated at these sites, and you do not need to be a resident of a specific county to get vaccinated at that county's megasite.
Happy May and try to get outside this weekend!
