Update on Bill S-5117 - petition signatures

Good afternoon All- Governor Murphy signed the attached bill into law today-S-5117/3994 which: Modifies number of signatures required for candidates to be placed on primary, general, nonpartisan municipal, and school election ballots; and requires the Secretary of State to publish certain nominating petition forms by January 1 of each year. Earlier this morning a chart went out for signature requirements-disregard that chart and use your populations as noted in the attached bill. Once something comes out a little more defined, we will share that with you but at this time we wanted to make sure you are aware of this approved bill since petitions are out for signature for many municipalities. Sorry for the confusion about the chart earlier, trying to get you all information out in real time as things progress. Good Morning & Happy Monday MCANJ Members! Although not signed by the Governor, A5117 has passed both houses and is awaiting the Governor’s signature. Attached please find new petition signature requirements which meet the new law. You should inform candidates to get at least the minimum number of signatures required under the new law. We have two Committees that have positions available. 1. The Public Relations Committee shall plan and organize the Booth at the Annual League of Municipalities Conference. Additional duties include hospitality at all MCANJ events. 1. The Resolutions Committee shall prepare and present at the Annual Meeting, resolutions recognizing those Municipal Clerks who have retired or passed away since the last Annual Meeting, as well as, present any resolutions passed by the County Associations requiring action by the membership. It shall also present appropriate resolutions of recognition and service to Associations or individuals. Resolutions shall be provided to the Secretary for inclusion in the minutes of the Annual Meeting. MCANJ is seeking Member Spotlight Nominations, application is attached. Eligibility: Municipal Clerks, Acting Municipal Clerks, Deputy Municipal Clerks, Assistant Municipal Clerks, County Clerks, Deputy County Clerks, Freeholder Clerks and Deputy Freeholder Clerks who are current members of MCANJ (Municipal Clerks’ Association of New Jersey) are eligible for nomination. Goal: To highlight those working in the profession who bring positive attention to the role of being a “Clerk”. Objective: To recognize MCANJ members who promote their position as “Clerk” through civic activities and events in their work or home community that is outside the scope of their normal duties and responsibilities.
